The God of Small Things

Just finished reading this beautiful, engrossing novel. It's totally something you'd read in an English Lit class, except it's contemporary style is engaging enough for anyone--even those not seeking a PhD in Shakespeare.
It is about a very disfunctional Syrian Christian family in India surviving the 1960's and an ensuing tragedy and a teeny bit of their life beyond the tragedy. It's a good book because it made me want to find out more about the Indian caste system, paravans, Kathakali, and other things related to Indian culture (like, what IS the difference between a Sari and a Mundu?) There is everything in this novel, from a communist revolution to forbidden love, and I didn't find anything formulaic about it. Which is why I probably enjoyed it so much.
Just in case you're looking for a good, intellectually stimulating read....
